Up until now, we'd spent every summer in NC with Anne and the family. This year we decided to ease into our 10 year plan with a week at the cabin followed by 8 nights driving up to DC and back down home.
It turned out this was to be out last summer at the cabin for the forseeable future, so here's a fond goodbye to summers at the cabin!
Our first stop was Roanoke, and a visit to the Virginia Museum of Transportation. This turned out to be the highlight of the trip for the kids, even more so than DC! They still look back on it with excitement. The museum is hurting a little for money, but the static train exhibits are impressive just for the sheer size and number of engines, if nothing else.
Next we headed for Staunton, VA for one night. We had planned on just stopping overnight "wherever" but it turns out we really found a gem in Staunton. We took the shuttle around town and visited the Frontier Culture Museum, a very cool place, with or without kids.
